  KS4 Maths: Laws of indices lesson

  Full lesson on laws of indices covering the basic laws of indices (fractional and negative indices are not covered).
  
  The explanations of the laws of indices in the PowerPoint slides are adapted from the fantastic lesson by @finbutler999.
  
  The support sheet is designed as a reference for when pupils are undertaking the main activity -- could be provided as reusable laminated sheets, or as a worksheet to be printed and provided for each pupil to make notes on and stick in their exercise books.
  
  The Tarsia activity is one uploaded by @chuckieirish -- I gave the pupils the six-tile simplified version of this first and then the remainder of the tiles as an extension.
  
  There are two plenaries -- the first involves sticking the posters on the wall around the room and asking pupils to add a post-it note to each with a question on it that simplifies to the given answer. The second is based on a question on the NRICH website.

  Use the cooperative learning strategy ‘jigsaw’ where pupils learn one thing + then teach it to their group. I found that the laws on ‘alternative 4th law’ are best left til after 1st 4 are learnt. i fake text dot com produced the phone screens. The code breaker + indices ppt were found on TES, but I can’t find them again; thanks whoever you are! The tarsia was Mr Barton’s, I changed it to have 6 mistakes so that pupils can be given soln sheet + circle them. Task 4 – teams given flipchart paper to write the answer in the middle + then write corresponding questions , teams then rotate ie peer assess.

  Clumsy Clive on Indices

  This was an idea I had in on the way to work one morning - Clive makes mistakes on his homework and you need to correct them, explaining the mistake he’s made in each case. I intend to use this as a plenary or starter to check learning etc. They should create discussion too. There are 5 different mistakes to correct on two separate sheets; number 2 cover negative and fractional indices.
