    Transforming graphs and functions

    Lesson presentations and activities

    • This is a full lesson that I’ve made on graph transformations. This lesson allows the students to investigate the various transformations for themselves using an online graphing software before combining the rules to solve exam-style questions on graph transformations. The main worksheet for this lesson has been taken out of an Edexcel workbook but I have attached a scanned copy of it. Answers are included for this task and the investigation task and there is a multiple-choice quiz that I have adapted from Tristanjones’ original resource. In addition, there’s a homework task of past exam questions with the corresponding mark scheme.

Summary sheet could be confusing for students as transformation 2 shows f(x-a) not f(x+a), which it is on the left and right columns

      Fantastic resource. Thanks for sharing.

    • Activity 1 Students should be given a copy of the grid and the the cut out transformed graphs from the answer grid. They then need to stick these on the grid. Activity 2 Transformations of Graphs 1 and 2 contain some functions and some blank grids. Set some transformations and then ask the students to sketch the transformed functions.

    • This is a rich Venn Diagram activity on Transformation of Functions, including f(x).

To access all the Venn Diagram activities in this collection, as well as teaching notes, please visit: http://www.mrbartonmaths.com/venn.htm

Here is why I love Venn Diagram activities so much:

      1) Students can always make a start. If they can think of a number/expression/object or whatever it might be, it has to go in one of the regions on the diagram, so they are up and running
      2) The more regions student find, the more challenging the task gets, which adds a nice element of differentiation
      3) They are incredibly versatile, and can be used for almost all maths topics for all ages and abilities
      4) They are easy to tweak by simply changing one of the circle labels if you find they are too difficult/easy
      5) Students can create their own as an extension task

I hope you and your students enjoy them.
