This Year 6 to Year 7 Maths Transition Challenge Booklet provides 42 structured daily sessions for confident pupils preparing for secondary school.

Designed as a greater-depth alternative to the standard summer transition booklet, the resource develops fluency while placing a stronger emphasis on reasoning, problem-solving, justification and mathematical communication. Each session contains five carefully sequenced questions, progressing from secure skills practice to more demanding applications and deeper-thinking tasks.

The booklet covers a broad range of upper Key Stage 2 and early Year 7 mathematics, including:

  • place value and calculation;
  • fractions, decimals and percentages;
  • factors, multiples, primes and powers;
  • ratio and proportion;
  • algebraic expressions and equations;
  • sequences;
  • negative numbers;
  • perimeter, area, surface area and volume;
  • angles, coordinates and transformations;
  • probability and statistics;
  • measures, conversions, time and scale.

Questions include missing-value problems, reverse calculations, error analysis, multi-step problems, comparison of methods, generalisation and “find all possibilities” tasks. Pupils are regularly asked to explain how they know, justify conclusions and provide counterexamples rather than simply produce final answers.

Each daily session also includes:

  • Misconception Watch;
  • Reflect;
  • Key Question;
  • Sometimes / Always / Never reasoning;
  • dedicated space for calculations and explanations.

The matching worked-solutions booklet provides clear methods, complete reasoning, model explanations, valid examples, proofs and counterexamples where appropriate. It can be used by teachers, tutors, parents or pupils checking their independent work.

This Challenge Edition is particularly suitable for pupils who are secure at the expected Year 6 standard and require greater depth rather than repetitive or substantially accelerated content.

All questions use clear UK mathematical language and notation, including properly presented fractions, powers, units and algebraic expressions.

A professional Beyond Printables resource designed to help pupils enter Year 7 ready to reason, justify and tackle unfamiliar mathematics with confidence.
