**A ready-to-teach Year 6 maths lesson focused on area and perimeter reasoning, including shape transformations, shaded areas and multi-step geometry problems.

This lesson develops pupils’ understanding of how area and perimeter change when shapes are split, combined or compared.**

This Year 6 maths lesson focuses on applying area and perimeter knowledge to solve challenging geometry reasoning problems.

Pupils explore how the perimeter and area of shapes change when squares are divided, combined or transformed into new shapes. They calculate missing measurements involving squares, rectangles, triangles and regular polygons, as well as solving shaded area problems.

The lesson encourages pupils to think carefully about the relationship between area and perimeter rather than simply applying formulas. Pupils use known measurements to solve multi-step problems and explain their reasoning.

Teachers can use the included Smart Notebook input slides to model strategies clearly and guide pupils through structured examples before independent practice.

Pupils then complete a differentiated independent activity designed to support all learners while still providing appropriate challenge. The tasks develop confidence with geometry, area, perimeter and SATS-style reasoning questions.

This resource is ideal for Year 6 geometry lessons, KS2 reasoning practice, SATS revision or targeted intervention sessions.
