Making Inferences is a complete Year 5 reading strategy unit built around AC9E5LY05 - the Australian Curriculum descriptor that asks students to use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning and to evaluate information and ideas. It also draws on AC9E5LA02, which asks students to move beyond bare assertions by taking account of authoritative sources. Read together, those two descriptors mean an inference is never just a hunch - it has to be supported from the text. Students learn the Inference Formula (Text Clues + Background Knowledge = Inference), practice distinguishing strong, quotable clues from vague guesses, learn to quote text with word-for-word accuracy, and build toward the RACE framework (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain) for complete evidence-based responses.
