Arithmetic & Reasoning Focus (Year 5 Priority Content)

Arithmetic questions are prioritised and revisited regularly, focusing on key Year 5 calculation skills, including adding and subtracting numbers with more than 4 digits (up to 6 digits), adding and subtracting decimals with up to 2 decimal places, multiplying 4‑digit numbers by 1‑digit numbers and 2‑digit numbers by 2‑digit numbers, dividing 4‑digit numbers by 1‑digit numbers, and adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator or with denominators that are multiples of each other.

Reasoning questions support pupils in applying these skills through four‑operation word problems, solving problems in context, and explaining and justifying calculation choices.

SPaG Focus

Daily SPaG questions focus on secure Year 5 expectations, including identifying and using word classes, understanding and recognising sentence types, applying accurate punctuation, and correcting and improving sentences.
