This seven-week sequence of morning tasks is designed to strengthen key grammar and spelling skills in Year 4 through short, daily retrieval activities. Each week focuses on revisiting previously taught content while introducing small, manageable steps that develop accuracy, fluency and independence. The planning covers a balance of grammar knowledge and applied spelling practice to prepare pupils for sustained writing across the curriculum.

The grammar strand includes work on coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, fronted adverbials, apostrophes for singular and plural possession, expanded noun phrases, verb forms, and the past progressive tense. Tasks are varied to include identification, correction, application and sentence construction, ensuring pupils secure both understanding and use of grammatical features.

The spelling strand provides structured practice of Year 4 spelling patterns, including suffixes such as –ture, –ous and –ion, as well as a range of common prefixes. Weekly activities include missing-letter tasks, word sorting, sentence application, prefix and suffix matching, and meaning-based challenges. These support pupils in developing spelling strategies, recognising patterns and increasing accuracy in independent writing.

Across the seven weeks, the morning work reinforces fluency, strengthens prior learning and supports children of all abilities through consistent routines and highly focused practice.
