The Year 10 Egg Challenge is designed to support students studying GCSE Food & Nutrition through a fun and practical investigation task.

Students will research eggs as a staple food, exploring nutrition, food safety, storage, labelling, heat transfer, and the science of cooking proteins — all key areas of the GCSE specification.

They will then apply their knowledge in a practical cooking lesson by preparing an egg-based dish of their choice, developing both their technical skills and confidence in the kitchen.

The Year 10 Egg Challenge includes:

  • Egg staple food research printout for students to complete independently prior to the practical lesson
  • Project introduction PowerPoint presentation
  • Practical lesson PowerPoint and recipe for Croque Monsieur and Croque Madam
  • Certificates and optional prize ideas to celebrate achievement, effort, and creativity throughout the challenge.

Outcomes:

  • Understanding egg labelling and food provenance
  • Learning about nutrition and high biological value protein
  • Food safety and correct storage of eggs
  • The science of cooking eggs, including coagulation and heat transfer
  • Eduqas GCSE exam-style questions and investigation tasks
