• Pupils know Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) and Orville Wright (1871-1948) were brothers who ran a printing shop and then a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio
• Pupils know humans had dreamed of flying for thousands of years - from the Greek myth of Icarus to Leonardo da Vinci’s flying-machine drawings to the Montgolfier hot-air balloon of 1783
• Pupils know the brothers tested kites and gliders at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina from 1900 to 1902 and invented wing-warping for steering
• Pupils know the first powered, controlled aeroplane flight took place on 17 December 1903 at Kitty Hawk - Orville flew for 12 seconds and 36.5 metres
• Pupils know almost no-one believed them at first, and Wilbur had to fly in France in 1908 before the world believed
• Pupils know that in just 24 years humans went from a 12-second flight to Charles Lindbergh’s solo Atlantic crossing in May 1927
