The aim of this lesson is to introduce the major theatres of war during the Second World War and help students understand where the conflict was fought on a global scale.

Designed as an ideal introduction to a World War 2 unit, this lesson helps students develop a clear geographical understanding of the conflict by exploring the main theatres of war in Europe, the Atlantic, North Africa and the Far East.

Students identify the countries involved, distinguish between the Allied and Axis Powers, and plot key locations on a world map that can be revisited throughout the unit.

Students also investigate a selection of iconic wartime photographs, analysing their historical significance through source-based enquiry. Images include Hitler at the Trocadéro, St Paul’s Cathedral during the Blitz and the raising of the Soviet flag over the Reichstag, encouraging students to explore how photographs can shape our understanding of the war.

Using historical information, students construct a chronological timeline of key events, deciding whether each represented a success or setback for the Allies or Axis powers. Throughout the lesson they develop their understanding of chronology, significance, geographical awareness, source analysis and historical interpretation.

The lesson concludes with an engaging Odd One Out plenary, reinforcing key knowledge and encouraging students to make links between the people, places and events studied.

This lesson provides an excellent foundation for GCSE History, introducing students to the global nature of the Second World War while developing the historical skills needed for later study.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, enabling students to track their progress and develop a deeper understanding of how the Second World War became a truly global conflict.

They will also learn about the significance of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan, refugees in World War 2 as well as interpretations as to whether Sir Arthur ‘Bomber’ Harris should be considered a war hero or not.
