Word problems are hard! They combine decoding, reading comprehension, and math! Throughout my years in the classroom I’ve experimented with different ways to build students’ conceptual understanding of equations and comprehension of common word problem phrasings which, often enough, can feel unnatural. Especially to our ESL learners.

These word problem puzzles are designed to help first grade students connect word problems, visual models, and number bonds to solve equations within 20. Students match three representations — a picture, a word problem, and a number bond — to build part–part–whole thinking and strengthen number sense.

As students engage with the puzzles, they encounter example after example of how word problems can be drawn, visualized and modeled with number bonds. This gives them a mental inventory to draw on when they model to solve word problems independently, and can be used as common language and examples for reteaching.

Targeted Skills:

  • Addition and subtraction within 20
  • Part–part–whole relationships
  • Compare problems (“How many more?”)
  • Understanding academic language such as “altogether”, “the rest” and “how many more”
  • Visual modeling and representation

The consistent structure allows students to focus on the mathematical thinking rather than decoding new formats.

How It Works
Students match:
A word problem
A visual representation
A corresponding number bond
The matching format creates a self-checking system. Visual models should match the numbers described in the word problem and shown in the number bond.

Includes:
Teacher overview and recommended use
2 “How to Play” Cards (solve or match only)
14 different puzzles
Designed for All Learners

This resource supports:
ESL students developing academic math vocabulary
Students who benefit from visual modeling
Small group intervention
Independent math centers
The language is intentionally clear and repetitive to build familiarity with common word problem structures.

This resource works well as:
A math center / rotation
Small group instruction
Review of addition and subtraction within 20
Targeted word problem practice
