A complete primary science lesson challenging scientist stereotypes, with an editable PowerPoint and printable pre/post assessment tasks.

This engaging lesson helps children explore what scientists look like, what they do and the wide range of careers that involve science. It challenges the traditional stereotype that scientists are always men wearing white laboratory coats and helps pupils understand that scientists come from all backgrounds, ages, genders and cultures.

The resource includes:

  • An editable PowerPoint lesson
  • A pre-lesson draw and describe a scientist activity
  • A matching and discussion task exploring different types of scientists
  • Examples of inspiring scientists from a range of scientific fields
  • A post-lesson task allowing pupils to revisit and improve their original ideas
  • A challenge activity asking pupils which type of scientist they would like to be and why
  • Printable PDF worksheets to accompany the lesson

The “Guess the Scientist” activity introduces pupils to a broad range of scientific careers, including astronomers, biologists, chemists, geologists, meteorologists, palaeontologists, marine biologists, forensic scientists, psychologists and volcanologists.

The pre- and post-task sheets provide a clear way to assess how pupils’ understanding has changed throughout the lesson. The final challenge encourages children to connect science careers with their own interests and explain their choices.

Ideal for primary science, STEM lessons, science week, careers education or introducing working scientifically.
