Teacher Description – Walter Tull (1888–1918)

Walter Tull was an English professional footballer, British Army officer, and one of Britain’s most inspiring pioneers. Born on 28 April 1888, he became one of the first Black professional footballers in the country, playing for Clapton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Northampton Town.

During the First World War, Walter volunteered to serve in the British Army. He joined the Middlesex Regiment, including the famous Footballers’ Battalion, and in 1917 became one of the first Black officers in the British Army to command white soldiers. He was widely respected for his leadership, courage, and determination.

Walter Tull was killed in action on 25 March 1918 while leading his men during the German Spring Offensive in France. His body was never recovered.

Today, Walter Tull is remembered as a sporting hero, a courageous soldier, and a pioneer who challenged prejudice through his achievements. His life encourages pupils to explore themes of equality, resilience, courage, remembrance, and perseverance.
