Complete “Ready to go” lesson with no adapting necessary!
New for AAQ Pearson Medical Science BTEC from Sept 2025 Specification
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
This lesson is part 4/4 of 4 lessons that cover the entire content of Unit 3 Learning Aim C/Task 3.

Layout of the lesson
•Recap on key microscopy calculations which have previous been studied in Unit 1
•How do we get microorganisms onto a slide through a smear spread
•What is staining, why is it important and the different types of staining using examples from the specification (Methylene blue, gram staining and india ink)
•What is the difference in gram positive and gram negative bacteria and how is gram staining achieved.
•Students watch a video on plating bacteria using aseptic technique and gram staining. Students write their own method based on this video for their coursework.
•Students are then provided with a method and animation to prepare a slide and stain their slide
•What is morphology, common bacterial shapes and arangements and how morphology with staining can be used as stronger evidence for bacterial identification
•Students then use a microscope to observe pre-prepared slides of different microorganisms. They will write their method and morphology obervations and use these to identify the microorganisms on the slides.
• What is the hanging drop method and why is it used?
•Guided evaluation to allow students to identify their strengths and weaknesses in their technique as well as limitations of staining and morphology observations in identifying microorganisms
•Summary of the content expected from students for the entirety of Learning Aim C/ Task 3

NO PRINTING REQUIREMENTS
