In this activity, students will examine the causes and course of Japan’s Sengoku Jidai, tracing how three powerful daimyo – Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu – each contributed to the gradual unification of the country through military force and political manoeuvring. They will also explore how the Tokugawa Shogunate maintained power for more than 250 years through a system of laws and controls designed to prevent the daimyo from mounting any serious challenge to central authority.
