This lesson contains:

  • An introduction to the purpose of paintings in Elizabeth’s era, and how it was used as propaganda. There is a quote from William Cecil, and a short video from Horrible Histories which brings it to life for us. Students write up a summary of the information they learned.
  • A look at the Rainbow Painting and a teacher-guided study of the features within. Students stick their little copies in and annotate around it, then match the features to the meanings on the board.
  • Students are given 5 more info cards with different paintings. they analyse them and try and summarise the impact Elizabeth was trying to have with each, using the features as evidence for their findings.
