Something i did that proved successful particularly as a lesson or tutor period starter, ask a random child a random times question If they get it wrong go round the class individually until you get the correct answer: then ask all the ones you asked before, if they get it wrong again ask the one that got it right the question again and return to the other child. On a one to one, and i did this with my son; Ask a random times question "7 x 8"; if he got it wrong I would tell him the answer; then ask a simple one "2 x 3" or similar; Then return to the "7 x 8" . If needed I repeated the cycle until he got it. Year 5 he was struggling with times tables. As a 'game' at home, he had his tables off pat in a fortnight, Great opportunities for giving praise all-round.
