Thoughts–Feelings–Actions Loop: Pupil Worksheet and Staff Facilitation Guide

Help pupils understand how situations, thoughts, feelings, bodily responses, actions and consequences can influence one another.

This editable emotional wellbeing intervention supports children and young people to map one recent, manageable situation and explore how a pattern developed. Pupils identify what happened, what went through their mind, how they felt, what they did or avoided and what happened next. They can then consider what kept the loop going and identify one realistic link they might be able to change.

The accompanying staff facilitation guide provides a sensitive, structured approach to leading the activity. It includes carefully sequenced questions, collaborative prompts and practical guidance for exploring the pupil’s experience without correcting, blaming or imposing an adult interpretation.

Included:

One-page Thoughts–Feelings–Actions Loop pupil worksheet
Staff facilitation guide
Structured good-practice question bank
Prompts for separating facts, thoughts, feelings and actions

The activity is informed by principles commonly used within cognitive behavioural approaches. It is designed as a reflective educational resource rather than a substitute for clinical assessment or therapy. For best results, use it during a calm, planned conversation after the pupil has had time to regulate.
