• Pupils know about the GREAT HEATHEN ARMY of 865 - a full invasion, not a raid - and how it conquered three of the four Saxon kingdoms
• Pupils know how ALFRED THE GREAT saved Wessex at the Battle of Edington (878) and made the Treaty of Wedmore that created the DANELAW
• Pupils know that ATHELSTAN was crowned the FIRST KING OF ALL ENGLAND in 927 - the unification the Saxons and Vikings together produced
• Pupils know that CNUT the Dane ruled England 1016-1035 and that the Saxon-Viking struggle ENDED with William the Conqueror at Hastings in 1066
