When a student hits a word they can’t read, what do they do next? If they know their syllable types, they have a system. They look at the vowel, they look at what surrounds it, and they know what sound it should make. That is what this display teaches — and why every K-2 classroom that runs a sound wall should have a syllable type display beside it.

SIX SYLLABLE TYPES COVERED

① Closed (CVC) — short vowel closed in by a consonant: cat, him, basket, dentist
② Open (CV) — vowel at the end, long sound: me, go, tiger, music
③ Vowel–Consonant–e (VCe) — silent e makes the vowel long: cake, home, compete, invite
④ Vowel Team — two vowels, one sound: rain, feet, boat, fountain
⑤ R-Controlled (VR) — r changes the vowel: car, her, bird, market
⑥ Consonant-LE (C+LE) — final stable syllable: table, little, puzzle, middle

WHAT’S ON EVERY DISPLAY CARD

Each card contains:

  • The syllable type name in large, readable type — visible from across the classroom

  • The pattern label (CVC, CV, VCe, etc.) in a badge

  • A consonant-vowel pattern diagram — dark boxes for consonants, gold box for the vowel, dashed box for silent e

  • The rule in simple, student-friendly language

  • Six keyword example words in a color-coded strip

  • Six multi-syllable examples showing where the syllable type appears in longer words

  • A teaching tip about the vowel sound rule

  • A decoding strategy — a one-sentence instruction students can follow when reading

  • A “On the sound wall” grapheme connection row — links the syllable type to specific grapheme patterns

    WHAT’S INCLUDED

6 Display Cards — color + B&W, full US Letter, one per syllable type. Print, laminate, hang.

Student Reference Card — all 6 syllable types on one page. Students keep in their reading folder or binder. Cut and laminate for durability.

Syllable Type Word Sort — 2-page activity. Page 1: 6-column sort mat. Page 2: 30 color-coded word cards to cut, sort by syllable type, and discuss.

2-page Teacher Guide — scope and sequence, daily routines, differentiation for K through Grade 2, and how to connect the syllable wall to the sound wall.

HOW TO USE

Introduce one syllable type at a time — do not post all six at once. Post the card when students have been explicitly taught that type. Refer to the wall during reading and writing: “What type of syllable is that? What does it tell you about the vowel?” Use the word sort after instruction to reinforce.

PAIRS WITH THE DESKMADE SOUND WALL SUITE

The syllable type display is designed to hang beside the DeskMade Sound Wall K-2. Every grapheme pattern on the sound wall belongs to a syllable type. When students know both systems, they have two ways into any word they can’t read.

The full DeskMade Sound Wall Suite:

  1. Sound Wall K-2 — classroom phoneme and grapheme display
  2. Student Sound Wall Journal K-2 — student personal reference
  3. Grapheme Sort Cards K-2 — literacy center sorting activity
  4. Heart Word Wall Cards K-2 — irregular high-frequency words
