What would it take to survive in a place where temperatures can fall below –40°, the ground itself is thawing, and a polar bear may see you as prey?

This B2–C1 English lesson takes students into the Arctic through original informational readings on survival, wildlife, climate, and culture. Students discover why snow can keep an igloo warm, how Arctic peoples adapted to extreme cold, what happens when permafrost thaws, and why encounters with polar bears require very different survival strategies from encounters with other bears.

The lesson also explores the human side of Arctic life, including caribou herding, the Northern Lights, Inuit throat singing, and traditional beliefs about “hidden people.”

Along the way, students build 17 B2–C1 vocabulary words, discuss survival decisions, weigh advantages and disadvantages, support opinions with evidence, and complete an Arctic “bucket list” activity.

All readings are original and written for English language learners. The lesson can be used in the classroom, online, with a tutor, or for independent study.
