Keep pupils engaged during the final weeks of the school year with this fun and challenging Summer Cryptogram Code Breaker activity. This KS2 resource encourages children to use logical thinking, pattern recognition and problem-solving skills to decode a hidden summer-themed message.

Children must crack a substitution cipher to reveal the message:
“Enjoy the sunshine, explore new places and make happy memories.”

This resource includes three differentiated levels of challenge, making it easy to support and stretch learners within the same activity.

Although it can be used across KS2, it is particularly recommended for Upper KS2 (Years 5 and 6), where pupils are more confident with reasoning and deduction tasks.

★ 1 Star Challenge – Easy
Children are provided with a full alphabet code key, with 14 key letters already revealed as helpful clues. These letters have been carefully selected because they are the most frequently occurring and useful within the message (such as E, A, S, N, O, T). This allows pupils to quickly identify common words and successfully access the puzzle with greater independence and confidence.

★★ 2 Star Challenge – Medium
Children are provided with a partially completed alphabet code, with 10 letters revealed. These letters have been chosen because they appear frequently within the message and provide strong starting points for decoding. Pupils must use deduction, pattern spotting and logical thinking to complete the cryptogram.

★★★ 3 Star Challenge – Hard
Children are provided with a more challenging partial alphabet code, with only 6 letters revealed. These have been carefully selected as the most useful entry points into the message, but pupils will need to rely heavily on reasoning, word structure and problem-solving skills to complete the task.

Across all levels, the same uplifting summer message is used, allowing pupils to access a shared theme while being appropriately challenged.
