Subtraction L01 Four in a Row | Single-Digit Subtraction is a printable subtraction game from a structured 26-level progression, designed to build early fluency and confidence.

This resource gives pupils focused practice in subtracting single-digit whole numbers through a simple Four in a Row game format. Pupils answer subtraction questions and try to connect four correct answers, making the practice more engaging than a standard worksheet while keeping the mathematical focus clear.

This is the opening level in the wider 26-level Subtraction progression. The complete pathway moves from basic whole-number subtraction through to decimals, directed numbers, fractions, algebraic subtraction, standard form and surds.

The rationale behind the progression is that pupils make better progress when practice is targeted, sequenced and achievable. Each level focuses on a specific stage of subtraction, so teachers can select the right level rather than relying on a random mixed worksheet that may be too easy in places and too difficult in others.

This individual Four in a Row resource is useful for:

starter activities
intervention
retrieval practice
homework
tutoring
cover lessons
paired work
small-group practice
KS2 arithmetic
KS2 to KS3 transition

The game format adds motivation and pace, but the purpose remains serious: pupils are building accuracy, confidence and fluency at the first stage of the subtraction progression.

This resource is sold individually as one level from the full 26-level Subtraction Four in a Row progression.

Whole-Number Subtraction Four in a Row Bundle | Levels 1–8

Build subtraction fluency through purposeful practice with this complete Whole-Number Subtraction Four in a Row Bundle. This bundle contains all eight whole-number levels from the structured 26-level Subtraction progression. Pupils move carefully from basic single-digit subtraction through to multi-digit and multi-step calculations involving increasingly demanding regrouping. Levels Included L01 – Single-Digit Whole-Number Subtraction L02 – Two-Digit Subtraction Without Regrouping L03 – Two-Digit Subtraction With Regrouping L04 – Two-Digit Subtraction Consolidation L05 – Multi-Digit Subtraction With Controlled Regrouping L06 – Multi-Digit Subtraction With Multiple Regrouping L07 – Three-Term Whole-Number Subtraction L08 – Multi-Step Whole-Number Subtraction Each level uses a simple Four in a Row format that turns focused subtraction practice into an engaging mathematical game. Pupils answer questions, locate the corresponding answers on the 6 × 6 grid and try to connect four correct squares horizontally, vertically or diagonally. The game format creates motivation and pace, but the mathematical purpose remains clear. Pupils develop: subtraction fact fluency secure place-value understanding accurate regrouping methods confidence with column subtraction organisation in multi-step calculations greater independence and checking accuracy The carefully sequenced levels allow teachers to select the right starting point for each pupil. Learners can consolidate an existing skill before moving gradually towards more demanding whole-number subtraction. These resources can be used as: starter activities intervention tasks retrieval practice homework tutoring resources cover work paired games small-group activities KS2 arithmetic practice KS2 to KS3 transition work KS3 numeracy support Four in a Row can also be completed independently as a self-checking worksheet, making the bundle suitable for both classroom and home learning. This bundle provides the complete whole-number subtraction pathway from Levels 1–8 and forms part of the wider 26-level Subtraction Four in a Row progression.
