Explicit, multi-sensory spelling support for medial doubled letters

A practical, ready-to-use spelling mini-kit for teaching common medial doubled-letter patterns in two-syllable words such as happy, puppy, sunny, funny, carry, hurry, muddy and silly.

Each teaching session takes approximately 8–10 minutes and can be used for 1:1 intervention, small-group support, tutoring or home learning. The routine is deliberately simple and highly structured so that it can be delivered by a class teacher, teaching assistant, tutor or parent without specialist linguistic training.

The resource uses a child-friendly “two jobs” memory cue to make the spelling pattern easier to remember. The accompanying Teacher Guide explains the purpose and limitations of this cue so that adults can use it confidently and accurately.

The activities move from explicit teaching and supported practice to writing from memory and attempting untaught words, helping students practise the spelling pattern in more than one context.

The Teacher Guide also includes a suggested five-session sequence, spaced review and guidance on what to do when a learner continues to omit the doubled consonant.
