A lively cultural lesson introducing students to a range of famous Spanish festivals and traditions. This is a great starting lesson for Year 7 Spanish, helping students become interested in Spanish-speaking culture while learning some key vocabulary linked to fiestas.

The lesson introduces festivals including La Tomatina, Las Fallas, El Colacho, Los Sanfermines, Concurso de Castells and Día de los Polvos. Students are encouraged to take notes on the name of each festival, the type of festival, when and where it takes place, and what happens during the celebration.

This resource could be used in several ways:

  • as an introductory Year 7 cultural lesson
  • as a carousel activity with information placed around the room
  • as a note-taking lesson alongside video clips
  • as a cover lesson
  • as part of European Day of Languages or cultural enrichment
  • as a springboard for discussion about festivals, traditions and Spanish culture

Students could watch short video clips, complete a mind map, collect information from different stations, or create their own summary of the festivals. A flexible resource that can easily be adapted into a full lesson, group task or independent research activity.
