The lesson follows a deliberate I Do–We Do–You Do sequence. Retrieval and vocabulary establish the prerequisites; representation and concept slides make the operation order explicit; teacher modelling includes three I Do and three matched We Do equations with protected working space and dedicated solution reveals.

Assessment for learning is built in through 12 one-question mini-whiteboard checks with immediate answers. These diagnose coefficient knowledge, inverse-operation order, sign errors, equations with the unknown on either side, decimals and checking.

Independent practice includes 24 minimally different equations arranged down columns for controlled variation. The sustained tiered task provides 8 Developing questions, 8 Secure questions, 4 Greater Depth prompts and one coherent Super Challenge. Pupils progress from fluent solving to error analysis, missing-value reasoning, construction and generalisation without drifting away from the core process.

Also included: two misconception checks, a real-life problem, a constraint challenge, exam-style questions, an exit check and complete answers.
