This complete Year 7 Core maths PowerPoint lesson teaches pupils how to simplify expressions containing non-linear terms by collecting only terms with identical variable parts and powers.

Designed as a genuinely classroom-ready lesson rather than a collection of disconnected slides, it follows a clear retrieval-to-independence sequence:

• six-question prerequisite starter with answers;
• precise vocabulary covering terms, coefficients, variable parts, like terms, non-linear terms and simplifying;
• clear representations that distinguish addition from multiplication and like from unlike terms;
• three structurally matched I Do–We Do examples with large modelling space;
• exactly 12 mini-whiteboard AFL questions, each followed immediately by its answer;
• 24 minimally different questions arranged down columns for controlled variation;
• Developing, Secure, Greater Depth and Super Challenge tasks displayed together;
• one consolidated tier-answer slide plus a complete Super Challenge solution;
• misconception diagnosis, problem solving, exam-style practice and an exit check;
• complete, checked answers throughout.

The deeper questions are rooted in the lesson mathematics: pupils reverse coefficients, analyse errors, use commutativity to recognise xy and yx as like terms, justify why unlike terms remain separate, and construct multiple expressions satisfying a target simplification.

Suitable for whole-class teaching, cover, intervention, revision or independent consolidation. The resource is fully editable, print-free and aligned to Sparx code M949.
