Octahedral tetrahedral linear complexes? Why do complexes with chloride ligands have tetrahedral geometry? Cisplatin mechanism of action? All this and more covered in this comprehensive lesson with questions and answers! This is a Year 13 A level lesson for Edexcel International Unit 5 – WCH15, but it can also be used for all UK exam boards. All the slides in this lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question.

Slide 1 - Title and 5-minute starter. The starter is a grid of four questions entitled ‘last week, last lesson, today’s learning and future learning’. Use this generic slide for all your lessons by simply changing the questions and the answers each time.
Slide 2 - Lesson objectives (see thumbnail image)
Slide 3 – recap of VSEPR theory
Slides 4 – 6: Y12 recap questions on shapes of molecules and bond angles. Answers appear on the screen as you click. Print hidden slides 5 and 6, two slides per sheet and trim
Slide 7 – introduction slide to predicting the shape of complexes
Slides 8 – 9: introduction to the three most common complex shapes (octahedral, tetrahedral and linear), and how to recognise when a molecule has this geometry
Slide 10 – further notes on octahedral complexes and the ligands which lead to the formation of these complexes
Slide 11 – explanation as to why chloride ligands lead to the formation of tetrahedral complexes
Slide 12 – further notes on linear complexes
Slide 13 - learning pit stop questions to test students’ understanding so far. Answers animate on the screen when you click
Slide 14 – Hinge: students asked to use the 3D model of xenon tetrafluoride on the board to draw the 3D representation. This serves as an introduction to a new shape for them: square planar
Slide 15 – explanation of what square planar means and what the bond angles are
Slides 16 – 18: cisplatin, a square planar complex. Students will be taught how to draw both cis- and transplatin
Slide 19 – use this slide to discuss cisplatin as an anticancer drug
Slide 20 - learning pit stop questions to test students’ understanding so far. Answers animate on the screen when you click
Slides 21 – 26: exam questions with mark scheme answers included with this resource

Edexcel International A level Chemistry - lessons with questions and answers | Topic 17 | Transition Metals and Their Chemistry

This bundle is comprised of 12 PowerPoint lessons covering **Topic 17 – ‘Transition Metals and their chemistry’** for the Edexcel International A level Chemistry course, Unit 5 – WCH15, but it can be used for all UK exam boards which have a Transition Metals unit. The PowerPoints are as follows: 1. Transition metals 2. Ligands and complexes 3. Colours in complexes 4. Shapes of complexes 5. Multidentate ligands 6. Reactions of complexes – copper 7. Reactions of complexes – cobalt and iron 8. Reactions of complexes – chromium and manganese 9. Reactions of complexes – vanadium 10. Reactions of complexes – zinc and nickel 11. Heterogeneous catalysis 12. Homogeneous catalysis Each lesson is exactly that . . . a lesson. There is a starter slide, lesson objectives slide, introduction of new knowledge slides, worked examples and then opportunities for students to try independent practice through mini plenary tasks comprised of several questions of graded difficulties. Questions are interspersed through the lessons at regular intervals and always have answers that animate on to the screen when you click. THESE ARE NOT THE INFORMATION ONLY TYPE SLIDES THAT SOME PEOPLE SELL, which are useless for delivering a lesson. We are a team of teachers, and these lessons have been made by actual Chemistry teachers who currently teach in secondary schools in England. We know exactly what you need, trust us. Every lesson has exam questions included as word documents which were made using Exam wizard. The mark scheme is at the end of each exam question and the answers have been screen shotted and pasted into the PowerPoint at the end. All the slides in every lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question. Please note: core practicals have not been included, as we are preparing a separate resource for all the core practicals. Watch this space! Please consider leaving a review! It really helps promote our store! Thank you! *PS: we have thrown in a bonus resource free of charge! Enjoy the chemistry drill rap about heterogeneous catalysis by MC Afrique, who is an affiliate of Lifeboat Teachers!*
