A four-week sequence following Nathaniel Tzao, a student in a Pupil Referral Unit, whose behaviour, reactions, and reputation are already taking shape — before his story is fully understood.

Across a series of connected poems, students track how moments build: a misunderstanding, a reaction, a repeated thought. Over time, these accumulate. Patterns form. Interpretations settle. And eventually, those patterns begin to look like identity.

In many classrooms, this is a familiar reality: students often carry a history — built from past behaviour, remembered moments, and expectation. Over time, that history begins to shape how they are seen, and how they see themselves.

This unit brings that process into focus — not as behaviour to manage, but as something to recognise, question, and understand through close reading and structured analysis.
