This lesson covers AQA Trilogy Combined Science specification 5.4.3.5 and develops students’ understanding of representing reactions at electrodes using half equations.

Students will:

  • State and apply the definitions of oxidation (loss of electrons) and reduction (gain of electrons) to identify oxidised and reduced species in reactions, symbol equations, and given half-equations
  • Write and balance half equations for reactions at the anode and cathode during electrolysis, identifying where oxidation and reduction occur and explaining why

The lesson includes retrieval quizzes, structured activities, and exam-style questions, making it suitable for KS4 higher-tier teaching or revision.
