A complete bundle of six ready-to-teach lessons for Breadth Theme 2 of Edexcel A-Level History: Rebellion and Disorder under the Tudors, 1485–1603, focusing on gaining the cooperation of the localities and the relationship between Crown and country.

This bundle is designed to help students build secure thematic understanding of how Tudor monarchs strengthened their authority beyond the centre. Across the six lessons, students explore the ways in which the Tudors governed through local institutions, regional control, local office-holders, law, finance, social policy, patronage, personal relationships and royal presence.

The sequence encourages students to think carefully about key A-level concepts including control, cooperation, local governance, royal authority, stability, patronage and the prevention of disorder. Lessons are enquiry-led, fully structured and designed to support both detailed knowledge-building and analytical judgement.

This bundle includes:

  • Lesson 7: How did the Tudors take control of the localities?
  • Lesson 8: The Council of the North and the Law in Wales Acts
  • Lesson 9: The changing role of Justices of the Peace and the 1513 subsidy
  • Lesson 10: The growth of poverty and Tudor government response
  • Lesson 11: Patronage and personal relationships with the monarch
  • Lesson 12: Royal progresses and the relationship between Crown and country

Students examine a wide range of key developments, including the Council of the North, the Law in Wales Acts, increasing borough representation, the changing role of JPs, the Tudor subsidy of 1513, the Statute of Artificers 1563, the Act for the Relief of the Poor 1598, patronage networks, royal grants, court positions and royal progresses.

The lessons include a range of activities such as sorting tasks, ranking activities, comparison grids, source work, judgement tasks, discussion prompts, essay planning and analytical writing. The final lesson includes a more detailed source-based focus on royal progresses, helping students develop source handling and evaluation within the breadth theme.

Ideal for teachers looking for a coherent, engaging and rigorous way to teach Breadth Theme 2, while helping students move beyond narrative knowledge towards stronger thematic analysis.

Created by an experienced History teacher and examiner with over 20 years of teaching and examining experience.
