The aim of this lesson is to evaluate why the Spanish Armada was poorly planned and assess how far Spanish mistakes contributed to its failure in 1588.

Students begin by investigating Philip II’s decision to invade England and examine the worsening relationship between Spain and Elizabeth I. Using a ‘pressure cooker’ activity, they analyse the key events that increased tensions between the two countries, including religion, privateering, the Dutch Revolt, the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots and Drake’s raid on Cádiz, before judging which factors pushed Philip towards invasion.

The lesson then focuses on the planning of the Spanish Armada, evaluating why the invasion strategy was flawed from the outset. Students investigate the roles of Philip II, the Duke of Medina Sidonia, the Duke of Parma and the late Santa Cruz, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of Spain’s commanders and considering why Philip’s decision to combine different invasion plans created serious logistical and communication problems.

Using a Thinking Quilt activity, students challenge common assumptions about the Armada and evaluate the major weaknesses of the Spanish plan, including poor coordination, communication difficulties, unsuitable leadership and unrealistic expectations. They decide how these factors reduced Spain’s chances of victory before the fleet had even reached England.

A fun retrieval activity challenges students to unscramble key historical terms, commanders and events from the lesson before they apply their knowledge to a GCSE exam-style question. Structured writing support, sentence starters and a model answer help students develop their explanation and evaluation skills.

An enquiry question is introduced at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout, enabling students to track their progress and develop a deeper understanding of why the Spanish Armada failed.

Fully planned and ready to teach, this lesson develops historical enquiry, causation, significance, source analysis and GCSE exam technique.

Spanish Armada planning and preparation
Analysis of Medina Sidonia, Santa Cruz and the Duke of Parma
Pressure Cooker causation activity
