This purposeful unit for place value includes 6 lessons, and embeds real life scenarios throughout:

Lesson 1 - focuses on the value of numbers up to 10 million and the role that each digit plays, including place holders.

Lesson 2 - teaches students to read, write and order numbers up to 10 million and explores the role that each digit plays, including place holders.

Lesson 3 - investigates the place value digit shifts when multiplying or dividing by 10, 100, 1000 and explore these powers of 10 (exponents of 10).

Lesson 4 - identifies how to compare integers on a number line, up to 10,000,000.

Lesson 5 - explores the how and why of rounding any integer to exponents of 10 (10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000 or 1,000,000)

Lesson 6 - focuses on how to calculate past zero with negative numbers, using zero as a benchmark

Knowledge:

  • I know that place value positions to the left of a digit increase exponentially by a power of 10.

  • I know that rounding is a mathematical efficiency tool used to make extremely large numbers manageable and functional.

  • I know that negative numbers represent real-world values below zero and follow the same structural rules as positive integers.

Skills:

  • I can read, write, compare, and order integers up to 10,000,000.

  • I can position large integers on a number line by determining midpoints and scale intervals.

  • I can round any multi-digit whole number up to 10,000,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000, or 1,000,000.

  • I can calculate intervals and distances across zero when working with positive and negative values.

What’s Included?

Your download includes everything you need for a successful series of lessons:

Unit Overview Notes: Outlines the knowledge, skills, and pre-requisites for the entire unit, exploring the question ‘Can looking at the very large help us map our world?’

Detailed Lesson Walkthrough/Notes: Includes a step-by-step guide with guiding questions and key discussion points for each lesson.

Guiding Questions: Great opportunities for AfL throughout each lesson, designed to help your students draw on their previous learning and make purposeful connections across the unit.

Lesson Slides: Engaging slides to guide each of your lessons.

Lesson Activities: Includes accessible, low-floor high ceiling activities for each lesson that all students can access through adaptive teaching, leading to improved confidence. There are also opportunities embedded in each lesson for further challenge to extend learners further.

Exit Ticket: Purposeful closing tasks which allows students to demonstrate their understanding, skills and knowledge - a great opportunity for AfL.
