The “ea” sound is found in Phase 5 phonics, which introduces more complex graphemes like “ea”. In Phase 5, children learn that “ea” can make the long “e” sound (as in “sea”), and also learn its alternative pronunciations, such as the short “e” sound (as in “bread”).
