A two‑part worksheet for KS3–GCSE English Language
This resource helps students recognise persuasive techniques in real‑world advertising before applying the same skills to plan their own persuasive article. It’s ideal for building confidence with AFOREST‑style features and for preparing students for GCSE English Language (Paper 2, Q5).

Activity 1: Spotting Persuasive Features in an Advert
Students analyse a Braun Baby Hand Blender advert and identify key persuasive devices. The table prompts them to find examples of:
• Power of Three / Triadic lists
• Rhetorical questions
• Superlatives (e.g. “The fastest way” )
• Emotive adjectives (e.g. “Slim and soft handle” )
• Powerful verbs (e.g. “Enjoy perfect results” )
• Persuasive adverbs (e.g. “Perfectly designed” )
• Lists, repetition, personification
• Direct address
• Emotive pronouns
• Facts and opinions (e.g. “Parents have enough heavy stuff in their life…” )
This activity strengthens students’ ability to spot, label and explain persuasive techniques—an essential skill for both reading and writing tasks.

Activity 2: Planning a Persuasive Article
Students then plan a persuasive article for a community magazine, arguing that a local music festival would benefit the area. They are encouraged to use as many persuasive features as possible from Activity 1.
The planning grid supports them to:
• Generate positive arguments (e.g. “More people would use the local businesses during the festival” )
• Anticipate counterarguments and respond persuasively (e.g. concerns about crowds or inconvenience)
• Build a balanced, structured argument
• Apply persuasive techniques purposefully
This activity directly prepares students for GCSE extended writing tasks by modelling how to plan effectively and integrate persuasive devices.
