In this lesson students will learn what oxidation reactions are, and the differences between an oxidation reaction and combustion reaction. This lesson will allow students to identify oxidation and combustion reactions from practical activities and demonstrations, and write word equations for these types of reactions.

This lesson is filled with AfL strategies and mini-whiteboard checks which assess students’ understanding and build literacy skills. It also contains fully editable risk assessments for the student practical and teacher demonstrations, as well as CLEAPSS guidance, full editable risk assessments, and video alternatives for the demonstrations.

This lesson is the third lesson in the KS3 "Chemical Reactions” topic, and is designed with non-specialist teachers in mind, being easy to follow and present, and comes with complete answers to all activities and examples built into the powerpoint slides, along with hints and tips about lesson delivery in the powerpoint’s “notes” section.

Lesson Includes:

  • Interactive powerpoint with delivery tips/notes
  • Integrated answers on slides
  • Built in AfL tasks
  • Scaffolding, and “I do, we do, you do”
  • Stretch and Challenge Tasks throughout
  • Student practical activity with worksheet and full answers
  • Practical Demonstrations/video alternatives
  • Full, editable risk assessments for practicals and demonstrations

Lesson resources include:

  • Lesson Powerpoint (pptx.)
  • Oxidation and Combustion Reactions - Student Worksheet (PDF)
  • Oxidation and Combustion Reactions - Worksheet answers (PDF)
  • Editable Risk Assessment - Student Practical (MS Word Doc)
  • Editable Risk Assessment - Teacher Demonstrations (MS Word Doc)
  • CLEAPSS guidance - Hydrogen Balloon - SRA038 (PDF)
  • CLEAPSS guidance - Methane Bubbles Demonstration - SRA003 (PDF)

Lesson objectives:

  • State the meaning of oxidation and combustion
  • Predict the products of the combustion of fuels
  • Write word equations for oxidation and combustion reactions
  • (WS) Identify oxidation and combustion reactions from practical observations
