KS3–KS4 Food Technology lesson on life stages and nutritional needs. Students design a balanced breakfast for different ages and explain their choices.

The resource is clear, structured and suitable for cover lessons or non-specialist teachers, with step-by-step activities and minimal preparation required.

This engaging Food Technology lesson teaches students about life stages, nutritional needs and balanced diets using the Eatwell Guide through a creative breakfast design challenge.

Students begin by learning about the main nutrients and what they do in the body using an interactive fill-in-the-gaps worksheet. They then explore how nutritional needs change at different life stages, including toddlers, children, teenagers, adults, athletes, pregnant women and older adults.

Students apply this knowledge by choosing one person from a range of scenarios and identifying an important nutrient they need based on their age and lifestyle.

They then design the best breakfast for that individual, selecting foods that provide the nutrients required.

The activity includes cut-and-stick breakfast ingredients, allowing students to colour, cut and build a breakfast on a plate template, making the lesson engaging and accessible for KS3 learners.

Students then use the Eatwell Guide to check whether their breakfast is balanced, helping them understand how different food groups contribute to a healthy diet.
