A visual aid to support pupils to complete adult directed tasks. The ‘next’ should always be a motivator, something that the child wants to do and the now is the adult directed task. Once the adult directed task is complete take the symbol off and the child then completes the ‘next’. Don’t move the motivator across to the ‘now’ but ensure to set up the board again when asking the child to complete another adult directed activity.

These should not be used as a schedule eg: now: phonics, next: maths. They are for when a child is finding it challenging to complete the adult directed task and needs a motivator to follow eg: now: phonics, next: Playdough. A timer (sand timer of another visual aid) to be used to give the child plenty of warning when the motivator is coming to an end. Reset the board so that they can see that their motivator is going to happen again. This resource is built on trust, if a motivator is put on the next there must be time for the child to complete it.
