This 50-minute KS3 Chemistry lesson introduces neutralisation and its uses in everyday life in a clear, structured, and SEN-friendly way. Created for students in an SEN Secondary School, but equally suitable for mainstream Year 7 and Year 8 science lessons.

Students build understanding through explicit teaching, scaffolded questioning, regular checking for understanding, whiteboard retrieval activities, and real-life applications of chemistry. Following teacher instruction, students apply their knowledge through structured tasks and everyday scenarios.

Explicit Teaching – What is Neutralisation?

Students learn:
Acid + Alkali → Salt + Water
Neutralisation moves pH towards 7

Why neutralisation is useful in everyday life: Real-Life Example – Jellyfish Stings
Students apply their understanding to explain why vinegar can be used to treat certain jellyfish stings, linking pH knowledge to a real-world situation.

Task 1 – Neutralisation in Daily Life
Students explore common examples of neutralisation including: Bee stings
Wasp stings, Tooth decay, Heartburn. Students identify whether an acid or alkali is needed to neutralise each problem.

Whiteboard Retrieval - Students classify pH values as: Acidic, Neutral, Alkaline

Task 2 – Household Neutralisation: Students select suitable household products to neutralise common acidic and alkaline problems, applying their understanding to practical situations.

Whiteboard Retrieval – What Would You Add? Students decide whether an acid or alkali should be added to different substances based on their pH values.

Task 3 – Neutralisation Scenarios: Students read a range of real-life scenarios and complete structured explanations using key scientific vocabulary.

Task 4 – Knowledge Retrieval: Students consolidate learning by completing a concept map, adapted for SEN/LAP.

Plenary – Acidic Lake Problem: Students apply their understanding to explain why scientists add limestone to acidic lakes and how this helps protect ecosystems.
