The Importance of Journals for Supporting Mental Health in Primary Pupils

In today’s primary classrooms, supporting children’s emotional wellbeing is just as vital as supporting their academic progress. One simple yet powerful tool that can make a meaningful difference is journalling. For pupils aged 7–11, keeping a journal provides a safe and accessible way to understand their emotions, build resilience, and develop lifelong self-reflection skills.

  1. A Safe Space for Feelings

Children in upper primary years often experience complex emotions but may struggle to express them verbally. A journal gives them a private, judgement-free space to explore how they feel, what worries them, and what brings them joy. This helps normalise emotional expression and strengthens their ability to recognise and label feelings — an essential foundation for good mental health.

Journals aren’t just for managing difficult feelings — they are also a space to celebrate successes. Recording things they are proud of, new skills they’ve learnt, or challenges they’ve overcome encourages pupils to develop a growth mindset and a sense of personal achievement. These positive reflections contribute greatly to emotional wellbeing.

Practical Ways to Introduce Journalling in Primary Classrooms

  • Set aside a short, regular time each week for journalling (5–10 minutes is enough).

  • Offer simple prompts such as “Today I felt proud when…” or “One thing I found challenging was…”.

  • Remind pupils that journals are private unless they choose to share.

  • Normalize reflective writing by modelling it or sharing safe, age-appropriate examples.

  • Encourage pupils to revisit previous entries to notice their progress and emotional growth.
