This lesson anaylses the 1969 Moon Landing, the significance of the Space Race during the Cold War and the conspiracy theories that continue to surround the event today.

Students begin by investigating why it was so important for the USA to be the first nation to land a man on the Moon, using their knowledge of Cold War rivalry to prioritise and justify their reasoning.

They then analyse contemporary footage and sources, meeting key figures such as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, to appreciate the scale and significance of this remarkable achievement.

The lesson then challenges students to become historians by examining evidence, interpretations and conspiracy claims. Through source analysis and critical thinking activities, they evaluate competing arguments before reaching their own sustained judgement on whether the Moon Landing was fact or fiction.

To consolidate their learning, students complete an extended written response using carefully selected evidence, supported by argument and evaluation vocabulary where required.

The plenary develops students’ analytical skills further by asking them to determine whether a series of statements represent genuine facts or fake news.

This lesson forms part of a wider Cold War enquiry: Why did civilians fear for their lives during the Cold War? Students revisit this central question throughout the unit, recording and developing their ideas each lesson to demonstrate progression and deepen their understanding of life in the nuclear age.
