AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603

The aim of this lesson is to question if Mary was fit to rule as a Queen and as a woman.

This lesson introduces students to the complex legacy of Mary I, encouraging them to analyse how and why historians’ interpretations of her reign have changed over time.

Students investigate the challenges she faced upon succeeding to the throne and evaluate whether her reputation as ‘Bloody Mary’ is justified.

Students are provided with the historical context behind Mary’s succession before completing differentiated prediction tasks about the likely successes and failures of her reign. Through guided reading activities, source analysis and evidence-based discussion, students build their understanding of Mary’s upbringing, beliefs and political difficulties.

The lesson also introduces key individuals surrounding Mary, including Reginald Pole and Philip II of Spain, before students complete an engaging ‘talking heads’ plenary in which they decide who would have said different statements and viewpoints.
