This is a lesson covering the witches’ appearances in the whole of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Students will annotate and analyse their copies of the play, exploring what powers the witches have, folk beliefs of the time as well as other context, how Shakespeare uses language and stage directions to show what the witches can do, and what the purpose of this representation was. There is enough material here that teachers could split it into multiple lessons if they want to thoroughly explore a scene. Contextual information in the lesson has been properly researched and credited, so there is no need for extra work on that count. The students are also encouraged to draw conclusions across the play, e.g. that the witches have limited power to directly harm baptised people in Shakespeare’s imagining of them. By the end of this lesson, the class will have a full understanding of these villain characters.
