This fully resourced lesson explores the life, achievements and legacy of Leonardo da Vinci, one of the most influential figures of the Renaissance. Students investigate why Leonardo is often described as the ultimate Renaissance Man and examine how his work transformed art, science, engineering and human understanding.

The lesson begins by revisiting prior learning about the Renaissance before introducing Leonardo through source analysis, discussion and keyword activities. Students explore famous works such as the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper and the Vitruvian Man, while also examining Leonardo’s inventions, anatomical studies and scientific investigations.

Through guided reading, video notes, timeline activities and historical enquiry tasks, students build a detailed understanding of Leonardo’s life and achievements. A particular focus is placed on historical causation, with students evaluating the social, economic, political and individual factors that contributed to Leonardo’s success during the Renaissance.

Students then apply their knowledge through ranking activities, structured PEEKA writing and assessment tasks that encourage them to justify which factors were most important. Throughout the lesson, students develop historical knowledge, chronological understanding, critical thinking and extended writing skills.

A complete lesson requiring minimal preparation.
