1-Hour Lesson – Fully Interactive – Ready to Teach

Dear Colleague,

Imagine towns where law was scarce, disputes were settled at high noon, and outlaws often ruled the streets. Understanding how law and order developed in the American West helps students see how frontier society struggled to maintain justice amidst rapid expansion and conflict.

This lesson is the fourteenth in a unit on the American West. It examines law enforcement, the causes and types of crime, and their impact on frontier communities. Students consolidate their knowledge through interactive tasks and exam-style questions.

All lessons in this series follow a consistent structure, supporting coherent learning and helping students track their progress:

LO 1: To understand the features of law in the West
LO 2: To explain the factors behind crime
LO 3: To evaluate the types of crimes and their impact

Learning Features:
Fully assessed tasks with opportunities for feedback
Extension activity for higher-achieving students
Resources provided at the end of the PowerPoint

This is a straightforward, knowledge-rich lesson that can run for 1 hour.

I have also created Lesson 15 on Billy the Kid. You might also want to explore my sets on Plains Indians, Settlers and Development of the Plains, Law and Order, or the full unit (24 lessons, 100 hours of planning).
