This KS4 Macbeth Reading Comprehension resource contains five key extracts from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, each with three differentiated question sets (easy, medium, hard). The passages and questions are designed to develop students’ understanding of Shakespearean language, inference, analysis, and structure, making them ideal for English Literature lessons, exam preparation, homework, or cover work.

The extracts cover essential moments in the play, including:

The witches’ prophecy to Macbeth (Act 1, Scene 3)

Lady Macbeth’s soliloquy calling on the spirits (Act 1, Scene 5)

Macbeth’s dagger soliloquy before murdering Duncan (Act 2, Scene 1)

Banquo’s ghost at the banquet (Act 3, Scene 4)

Lady Macbeth sleepwalking (“Out, damned spot”) (Act 5, Scene 1)

For each extract, students are challenged to:

Retrieve information and demonstrate understanding of the text

Infer meaning and explore character motivation

Analyse language, imagery, and structure

Consider dramatic effect and thematic development

This resource is fully differentiated to support all learners, from those needing scaffolding to those ready for higher-order analysis. It is perfect for:

In-class guided reading or comprehension tasks

Homework or independent study

Cover lessons or revision sessions for GCSE English Literature

By working through these extracts, students will strengthen skills in Shakespeare analysis, quotation recall, textual interpretation, and exam-style question responses, helping to build confidence and competence in tackling Macbeth at KS4 / GCSE level.
