This KS3 Poetry Scheme of Work explores a wide variety of engaging and thought-provoking poems, helping students develop their analytical, interpretative and creative writing skills. Although typically taught in Year 9, the scheme is equally suitable for a high-attaining Year 8 cohort. Lessons are designed to be interactive and accessible, with a range of engaging tasks that encourage discussion, annotation, comparison and personal response. The scheme includes regular opportunities for retrieval practice, extended writing and formal assessment, allowing students to demonstrate progress and build confidence in poetry analysis. Having taught this scheme successfully on numerous occasions, I have found it highly effective in developing both student engagement and attainment in English.
