This scheme of work is aimed at lower KS3 pupils, supporting them in learning all about RHYTHM and PITCH. In order to bring these musical concepts to life we use London Landmarks - The Tate Modern (Rhythm) and The Shard (Pitch).

In this scheme of work, pupils have the opportunity to:

Rhythm

  • Learn what rhythm is and how it is differentiated from pulse
  • Learn to turn sounds into symbols
  • Learn how to add sizzle and spice to rhythms (triplets, dotted notes etc.)
  • Learn about word setting and how composers make great use of rhythm to give meaning to their words
  • Show their learning through a practical composition and performance task: The London Underground Rap

Pitch

  • Learn about high and low pitches - how they are written on the treble and bass clefs
  • How melody is created through the mixture of pitch and rhythm by exploring exciting pieces from diverse genres
  • Learn about minimalism and its use of short motifs which can be developed
  • Apply their learning of reading pitch and rhythm via a small scale performance of In C by Terry Riley
  • Learn to compose their own motif for use in a minimalist piece - and how to develop their idea successfully!
