KS2 art lesson on Yayoi Kusama. Pupils create a sketchbook study, analyse her work, and produce a dot-inspired fruit artwork using pattern and repetition. Includes - artist study, sketchbook double page spread, critique tasks and a dotty fruit art activity.

This engaging KS2 art lesson introduces pupils to contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama and her iconic use of bold colour, pattern, and repetition. Students explore her work through visual examples and guided discussion before developing their own artist study page.

Pupils will complete a double-page sketchbook spread including:

• Key facts about Yayoi Kusama

• Visual analysis of her artwork

• Copies and studies of her dot-based techniques

• Personal reflections and responses

They will then apply their understanding by creating a small final artwork inspired by Kusama’s style, focusing on a “dotty fruit” design using repetition and colour exploration.

The lesson also includes structured opportunities for:

• Critical thinking and art critique

• Peer discussion and feedback

• Developing vocabulary linked to contemporary art

Ideal for KS2 (Years 3–6), this resource supports sketchbook development, artist study skills, and creative experimentation with pattern and design.
