This pack contains a selection of resources teachers can use to help pupils develop their ability to make inferences about character thoughts and feelings. This a flexible resource which contains materials needed for teachers to organise 5 or more reading sessions. It is suitable for 1:1, group or whole class work.

What’s Included

• Five stories based on traditional texts: The Legend of Gelert, King Midas and the Golden Touch, Rumpelstiltskin, Persephone and Demeter, and Daedalus and Icarus.
• Character Feelings Emoji Worksheet – Pupils select an emoji they think appropriately represents characters feelings at a point in the story and explain their choice.
• Character Feelings Word Choice Worksheet - Pupils select a word they think appropriately represents characters feelings at a point in the story and explain their choice.
• Character Feelings Graph – Pupils consider the whole story and plot a graph to show the character’s feeling at different points and then explain what the graph shows. This activity is more challenging as pupils may need to be reminded of how to plot a graph.
• Write a Diary Entry in Role Worksheet – In role as a character from the story, pupils write a short diary entry about what has occurred expressing their feelings.
• Character Speech Bubble Worksheet – Teachers should choose a point in the story where a significant event has occurred but there is no speech. Pupils need to fill in the speech bubble writing what the characters might say about the event if asked.
• Character Thought Bubble Worksheet - Teachers should choose a point in the story where a significant event has occurred but the character’s thoughts have not been made explicit. Pupils should fill in the thought bubble to show what the character is thinking.
• Character Feelings Word Check List – This useful resource provides a list of words related to feelings along with definitions. Pupils often struggle to think of words to appropriately describe and define feelings. This word check list will support them with making word choices and could be provided to pupils so they can use it for reference during shared reading discussions and independent work.
• Inferring Character Feelings Sentence Stems PPT – This short PPT contains differentiated sentence stems pupils could use to discuss a character’s feelings at a point in the story. Sentence stems are labelled A, B, C with A being the easiest, followed by B and C which are progressively harder.
